POSITION OBJECTIVE:

 

This position is responsible for developing and implementing individual health care plans for students with life threatening health care needs’ complete and/or delegate health service tasks associate with these plans.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

 

• Triage, assess and address student and/or staff illnesses and injuries, including administrating medications, first aid and CPR, consistent with State laws and regulations.
• Delegate administration of medications to the extent appropriate under State law/regulations; monitor medication administration by other school staff; and administer medications when required by the situation and student health needs.
• Monitor student health records and data, including immunizations, documentation of medication administrations, confidential documents, health alert files and State reports.
• Manage health screening programs, including vision and hearing.
• Perform nursing assessments as part of the IEP process. Participate on MDT/IEP teams.
• Work as a member of a team with other nurses and health service staff to coordinate and carry out health services in the school community.
• Provide training and support to staff involved in health services delivery.
• Be a resource person for instructional staff. Be able to develop appropriate curriculum and materials for instruction in student classrooms regarding dental, nutrition, hand washing, infectious disease control, life threatening allergies, HIV/Aids, human growth and development and other health related topics as needed.
• Provide training to school staff on blood borne pathogens, asthma, anaphylaxis and other health concerns as required.
• Make appropriate health referrals based upon knowledge of available community health resources.
• Must rigorously comply with State regulations and guidelines to help assure appropriate health services for students and to guard against infectious diseases and other health risks.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

 

• Reports directly to and is supervised by the Building Administrator

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

 

Required:
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing and current Washington State registered nursing license (RN).


Prefered:
• Experience with public health, health education preferred

 

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):

 

• Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Educational Staff Associate (ESA) certificate as a school nurse.


KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

 

• Knowledge of health care, nursing techniques and principles, including pharmacology, state and federal regulations affecting RN and school RN responsibilities and licensure; basic record keeping processes.
• Knowledge of, and ability to work with, students IEP's (Individual Education Plans) and to contribute as needed to Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT's) and/or Section 504 processes.
• Knowledge of communicable diseases and ability to report such diseases to appropriate municipal and governmental agencies.

 

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

 

• Ability to delegate health service tasks safely consistent with State law and regulations.
• Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to effectively and collaboratively work with diverse populations
• Ability to administer first aid and CPR; administer medications to students, and knowledge of attendant laws and policies for dispensing, delegating medication administration and control of medications.
• Ability to respond consistently and appropriately to all students in a calm, reassuring and nurturing manner.
• Ability to plan and provide effective training to staff members assigned with delegated and other health care duties.
• Ability to learn and operate microcomputers and software system; remain flexible to changing situations, prioritize duties, organize activities and work independently; communicate tactfully and effectively, both orally and in writing; follow and give written and oral instructions; handle confidential matters and information in a professional manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds; lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds; perform tasks requiring bilateral dexterity; move quickly from one physical location to another; walk, stand, drive, crouch, crawl, bend and or kneel.
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements
• Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations

 

MENTAL DEMANDS:

 

• Must deal with a wide range of student health problems and crises, both in person and via telephone triage.
• Work is subject to varied types of emergencies as well as frequent interruptions.
• May need to deal with injured, angry, and/or distraught individuals.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. This position may be exposed to prolonged exposure to visual display terminals as required.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

 

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.

 

Work is typically performed at school sites, including the health room, office, classroom, playground, school grounds and general school environment.

 

May be required to travel between school sites and shift priorities as they arise.

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a general posting for one or more School Nurse positions. Positions may be full or part-time and will be filled as specific openings are identified.

 

$ 69,816 to $ 130,960 annual salary (based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreement salary schedule). Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and BEA bargaining agreement salary schedule. Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience.


Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon .45 FTE. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
